Turning 65? Sign up for Medicare soon.

If you have less than three months before you turn age 65, you may need to make a decision quickly regarding your Medicare. Specifically, your Part B coverage may be delayed if you wait until you turn 65 to sign up. This could mean you have no coverage until the selection kicks in. Essentially, you might have a gap in your insurance. Also, you need to select which Medicare Advantage Plan is right for you – before time runs out.

Why Signing Up Early Matters

When you turn age 65, you’re eligible for Medicare. However, if you are not receiving social security benefits, you may have to sign up in order to get your Medicare benefits. In addition, Medicare coverage is offered as Part A (hospital, skilled nursing and home health care), Part B (medically necessary & preventative services), Part C (usually includes everything Part A &B do as well as additional benefits such as prescriptions) and Part D. Also, choosing a supplemental Medicare policy is an important part of your overall coverage.

That’s why it is so important to learn as much as you can about your options now. In fact, Medicare has a specific “Initial Enrollment Period” during which time you may sign up for your Medicare options in the months before you turn age 65. According to the U.S. Government website for Medicare, you have a 7-month time period to select coverage. Here’s when you may sign up for this type of coverage:

  • 3 months before your 65th birthday
  • The month of your 65th birthday
  • Within 3 months after your 65th birthday

LEARN ABOUT MEDICARE PLANS

Plan Types Explained

Medicare has two main categories: Medicare and Medicare Advantage. Basic Medicare, also known as Part A and Part B, generally doesn’t cover all the medical needs you may have. However, Medicare Advantage provides additional benefits as well as choices for prescription drug coverage. Medicare Advantage is also known as Medicare Part C.

Medicare supplemental insurance is also a critical part of your overall insurance plan. Making sure you have enough coverage and no surprise medical bills is important. No one wants to be stuck with a big bill that their insurance didn’t cover or have to turn down a medical service because of their lack of insurance.

Don’t miss your opportunity – if you wait, you may not be able to sign up for supplemental insurance in time. Be sure to learn all about the policy options and supplemental insurance available to you.
